What is Rosacea?

Rosacea is a common, chronic, inflammatory skin condition that affects more than 10% of fair-skinned people and symptoms can include flushing, hyper-reactivity, persistent redness, pimples and pustules, inflamed blood vessels, and facial swelling. Rosacea is sometimes mistaken for acne, eczema, or even skin allergies.

There are many types of rosacea but the four main types are:

• Erythematotelangiectatic rosacea features redness and flushing, with visible blood vessels.
• Papulopustular rosacea involves redness, swelling, and breakouts that resemble acne.
• Phymatous rosacea causes the skin to thicken and take on a bumpy texture.
• Ocular rosacea causes redness and irritation in the eyes and swollen eyelids.

What causes Rosacea?

Researchers are still trying to figure out the exact cause of rosacea. Some of the current suspects include:

• Genetics
• Ultraviolet Radiation
• Immune system overactivity
• Skin mites
• Certain bacteria
• Vascular hyperreactivity

Regardless of what’s to blame, rosacea tends to run in families, so there’s a strong argument for a genetic connection.
